The Conradh na Gaeilge Ard-Fheis will take place this year at the Galway Bay Hotel from Friday 25 February to Sunday 27 February. The highlight of this year’s Ard-Fheis will see President of Ireland, Micheál D. Ó hUiginn, receive the Conradh na Gaeilge’s President’s Award at a special Gala Dinner, Saturday 26 February. President Ó hUiginn will address delegates and special guests regarding the Irish language.

The Ard-Fheis will begin on Friday 25 February with a panel led seminar and debate.  Máirín Ní Ghadhra, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, will Chair the event. The panel will be announced in due course.

Saturday morning, 26/2/2022, will see delegates and branches convene for the annual Conradh na Gaeilge convention. Delegates and members will have the opportunity to discuss, debate and agree motions, which in turn will set out the Conradh work agenda for the coming year.

Amongst the motions submitted for consideration at this year’s Ard-Fheis, are:

  • Motions concerning Irish language legislation north and south;
  • Motions concerning the Gaeltacht, Coláistí Samhraidh and housing / planning matters in the Gaeltacht;
  • Motions focusing on education policies, both north and south;
  • …and much, much more.

There will also be a series of community events on Saturday afternoon as part of the #AFCnaG programme. Amongst those, this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia will be launched in Galway, and the Third Level Assembly will convene in Áras na nGael.

Dr Niall Comer, President of Conradh na Gaeilge, said:

“It is a huge honor for us to be presenting Uachtarán na hÉireann, Micheál D. Ó hUiginn, with this year’s Conradh na Gaeilge’s President’s Award. Since beginning his tenures as President of Ireland, President Ó hUiginn has provided incredible support for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht. At the Ard-Fheis we will have the opportunity to recognise that support and to thank the President for all of his work in promoting the language down through the years. We look forward to hearing from the President as part of the proceedings. We wish to thank Uachtarán na hÉireann Micheál D. Ó hUiginn for accepting this award and for accepting our invitation to address this year’s Ard-Fheis.”

Julian de Spáinn, Ard-Rúnaí, Conradh na Gaeilge, said:

“The Conradh na Gaeilge Ard-Fheis is an annual opportunity for the Irish language and Gaeltacht community, for branches, members and guests, to come together and discuss, debate and agree the best way forward for the coming year. This year we have a busy programme of events, with launches, presentations, a seminar and of course, the highlight of the weekend will be the attendance of our guest of honour, Uachtarán na hÉireann Micheál D. Ó hUiginn.

This year our branches, members and guests can finally meet again as we return to a full in-person Ard-Fheis after spending almost 2 years online due to the pandemic. We are looking forward to welcoming all of our delegates and guests, many of whom have not had the opportunity to attend an event like this in person in a long time. We have plenty of work and company to look forward to.”

Friday also sees the launch of the Conradh na Gaeilge archive in NUI Galway.  Over the last three years the archive consisting of over 600 boxes has been processed and catalogued by Archivist, Niamh Ni Charra.  The cataloguing work is now complete and the full collection is available for consultation by researchers in the Archives and Special Collections Reading Room of NUI Galway Library.  Over the weekend, some material from the collection will be available to view in Áras na nGael, Galway. Conradh na Gaeilge wishes to acknowledge the ongoing support from The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for enabling us to carry out this work in conjunction with NUIG.

An Ard-Fheis:

  • Some events will be live streamed online. Further details to follow.
  • Covid19 health guidelines will be in force during the Ard-Fheis and all delegates and guests will be asked to follow the guidelines in place.
