CSO Publish First List of Names Including Irish Language Names

Posted in General.

Conradh na Gaeilge welcome the publication of Central Statistics Office's first list of names featuring Irish language names with the síneadh fada.

Seán, Éabha, Róisín and Oisín are included in the list of most popular babies' names in 2018.  The full list can be found here

Julian de Spáinn, General Secretary of Conradh na Gaeilge
"We welcome this step forward by the CSO that names with the síneadh fada be included in their databases. We hope this inspires other organisations, and State bodies especially, to follow in updating their systems to ensure the correct spelling of names in Irish."

TransportForIreland were recently called out for failing to include síneadh fada in names on the Leap Card.  There have also been complaints made about Iarnród Éireann, and the HSE - whose neglect to include the síneadh fada inspired Ciarán Ó Cofaigh to start the online campaign #FaighDoFada.
