From the Gaeltacht to Los Angeles: #Comhrá23 non-stop international conversation as Gaeilge on a journey around the world next week

The event begins on Monday 9 October 1:00pm (Irish time) and will continue for 74 hours to 4:00pm on Thursday 12 October

Next Monday, 9th October 2023, Comhrá '23 will begin with non-stop conversation through Irish for three days and nights around the world. The event aims to promote the Irish language in Ireland and abroad by encouraging people to converse as Gaeilge with both friends, family and the wider community.

Comhrá is celebrating ten years running this year, a project which has broken global records over the years and brought together hundreds of groups to take part since 2013. The online Comhrá will also be streamed live this year on snag.ie.

Speaking on the event, Brónagh Fusco, Comhrá ‘23 Coordinator said:

“This year, #Comhrá23 will travel around the world from Dublin to Copenhagen, from the Mourne to Los Angeles and from Donegal as far as France. We are delighted that groups in Ireland as well as international groups are participating in the event, and that we will have sparked conversations among Irish speakers everywhere, with participants having an opportunity to use the Irish language in new and exciting ways.”

Bairbre Ní Choisdealbha, a teacher in Coláiste an Eachréidh in Galway, commented:

“Here in the Coláiste an Eachréidh community we're looking forward to kicking off the Comhrá '23 campaign this year. It is a great platform to celebrate the Irish language, to share our pride and love for our language with the wider community and to convey the global importance of the language in the school and here in Athenry.”

Coláiste an Eachréidh in Galway will be the first group to taking part in Comhrá ‘23 which will then travel around the world.

Caitríona Weaver, Vice-President of Conradh na Gaeilge Los Angeles, said:

“Conradh na Gaeilge Los Angeles is delighted to be part of Comhrá '23 this year, representing American Gaels in the non-stop Irish language conversation reaching right across borders. We look forward to connecting with other groups taking part in #Comhrá23 as Gaeilge, wherever they are in the world.”

Comhrá is an annual event organised with funding from Foras na Gaeilge.
