Families and young people among those present in Parnell Square for Lá Mór na Gaeilge
There were hundreds gathered on Parnell Square yesterday for Lá Mór na Gaeilge in a celebration of the Irish language. The street was closed to traffic for the day with music, talks, craic and culture on display for the public.
Speaking about the day, Deirdre Heney, Leas Ard-Mhéara, Baile Átha Cliath, commented:
“We had an incredibly positive day with craic, music and workshops at Lá Mór na Gaeilge 2023. We had great events throughout the day and it was special to see people out enjoying themselves for the events. The day showed that the Irish language is alive and welcoming in Baile Átha Cliath!”
Mícheál Mac Donncha, Cathaoirleach Fhochoiste na Gaeilge, Comhairle Cathrach Baile Átha Cliath said:
“Baile Átha Cliath and Parnell Square have an especially rich history with the Irish language. We were delighted to see the crowds here this year, 130 years since the beginning of Athbheochan na Gaeilge. There were excellent events, great music, food, talks, markets and much more. Everyone who came out had an excellent time celebrating our beautiful language.”
Paula Melvin, Uachtarán Chonradh na Gaeilge said:
“Since the beginning of Athbheochan na Gaeilge and Conradh na Gaeilge, there has been so much done for the language and Lá Mór na Gaeilge shows that the future is bright. Lá Mór na Gaeilge welcomed everyone to use whatever Irish they have, with all sorts of events in the schedule from traditional singing and dancing, talks with new Irish communities, yoga and manuscript workshops and even a street céílí. Lá Mór na Gaeilge showed how fantastic the Irish language is in the second year of this event, and we’re looking forward to next year already!”
