Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail

Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail | Lárionad Gaeilge an Iúir, Co. an DúinGaeláras Mhic Ardghail is Newry's new cultural and Irish-language centre in Co. Down, and provides educational, cultural and social facilities for Irish speakers in the Newry and Mourne area. Craobh an Iúir, the Newry branch of Conradh na Gaeilge, opened Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail on 18 Feabhra 2013 as a result of Newry and Mourne District Council, The Irish Language Investment Fund, Comhaltas Uladh and Craobh an Iúir working in partnership together to achieve a great outcome.

The cultural centre gives a permanent home to Craobh an Iúir, a branch that has worked ceaselessly for over 100 years to promote and encourage the Irish language in the area. There are classrooms, an historical archive, a library, an exhibition space and a large hall for events in this Irish-language centre, giving a physical focus to the regeneration of the Irish language in the region and as such, being a great addition to the development of cultural tourism in the area.

The McArdle family bequeathed their own house to the Irish community in Newry, and were themselves a family that worked tirelessly to promote the Irish language and culture in the Newry area. In respect for the McArdle family's vision and generosity, Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail will facilitate the normalisation of the Irish language in social, educational and economic life in Newry.
