Exciting New Era for the Conradh

A new constitution signalling the beginning of an exciting new era for Conradh na Gaeilge was passed by an overwhelming majority at a special Ard-Fheis in Dublin on Saturday, 12 April 2008.

Both young and old representatives from branches of Conradh na Gaeilge across the country gathered in Wynn's Hotel, Abbey Street to cast their vote on one of the most radical motions ever put forward to revise the organisation's principle document of intent, and the revised constitution was passed by a huge majority following a spirited discussion from the floor.

Dáithí Mac Cárthaigh, President of Conradh na Gaeilge says: "Not only does the new constitution reaffirm the place Irish has at the heart of the organisation, but I'm delighted that the new wording welcomes Irish-speakers from all backgrounds and traditions, individual and branch members alike, to join the Conradh regardless of their political stance.

It is also very heartening to see the amount of passionate young people that came to the Ard-Fheis to vote on this important decision and to have their say in the future growth and development of the Conradh."

As Julian de Spáinn, Conradh na Gaeilge's General Secretary explains: "We are encouraging all in the Irish-speaking community to set up branches of the Conradh, as we always have done in the past, but now we are also encouraging individuals to become full members and to play an active and democratic role in the organisation.

Under this revised constitution, the structure of the Conradh will adapt to the conditions and demands of our present day society and therefore better serve the modern needs of Irish-speakers throughout the whole island of Ireland.

There will be a place in Conradh na Gaeilge for anyone and everyone with an interest in the language and I would like to take this opportunity to invite anybody not already involved in the work of the Conradh to register with us and help us promote the Irish language."
Conradh na Gaeilge's new constitution will come into effect on 12 May 2008 at midday.
