The “CEARTA” jersey sold out overnight after its release on Wednesday.
Conradh na Gaeilge, in partnership with Irish artist and designer Spicebag, have released a special edition jersey in support of CEARTA - The National Protest for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht, which will take place this Saturday, 20 September.
The “CEARTA” jersey, released yesterday, is a strong symbol of solidarity designed to amplify the voices of communities fighting for rights and recognition for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht. 70% of proceeds will go to the Irish language and Gaeltacht movement and to help cover the costs of the national protest.
Spicebag, known for his politically and culturally rooted designs, has built a strong reputation for using art to raise awareness of social justice causes. Last year, his An Phalaistín scarf raised thousands for the Palestinian Red Cross, and his recent football jersey for dignity4palestine sold out within hours.
Speaking about the collaboration, Spicebag said:
“ The Irish language has always been important to my work, whether woven into my designs or the titles of my art, as has been calling out inequality between communities, government ineptitude, and a broken housing market. When Róisín Ní Chinnéide from Conradh na Gaeilge reached out to work on something for CEARTA, I jumped at the chance to combine those elements of my practice and make something that I feel is truly important.
In the minds of many Irish people, the Irish-speaking communities exist in a world apart from everyday life, magically thriving out on the West Coast or up by the Falls—places you visit once in primary school, immune to the various crises plaguing the Island North and South.
In truth, the communities fighting to keep Irish alive are equally impacted by rising rents, soaring house prices, and cuts to government funding. The language is not some mystical constant; its survival is not guaranteed, and it requires the same energy and militant support given to housing and other social issues.”
Róisín Ní Chinnéide, Conradh na Gaeilge, Advocacy Manager who was working with Spicebag on this project said:
“This protest is being organised to give the Irish language community an opportunity to take to the streets together to give an unequivocal message to the government that the status quo can no longer be accepted. I got in touch with Spicebag to see if he'd be interested in designing a jersey for us to help fundraise towards the movement, and we're incredibly grateful that he was happy to work with us on this project.
Political and social justice issues are interwined with Spicebags artwork, as they are with our own work. The Irish language community is eternally standing against inequality and challenging the authorities, north and south. We're delighted to be collaborating with an artist who shares that same trait.”
The jerseys sold out overnight, but to facilitate the demand you can now pre-order from Spicebag’s website spicebagmerch.bigcartel.com/product/cearta-jersey-spicebag-x-conradh-na-gaeilge
